Minister Avcı advices post graduate students: Return with all the furnishings of multi-culture

Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı tells post graduate students who have won the right to be educated abroad: “We are the remnants of an empire. Multicultural life is no stranger to us. When you come back home be sure to return with all the furnishings of multi-culture that befits people who have inherited from an empire.”

Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı attended the information and orientation meeting for about one thousand students who won grants from the ministry to go abroad for post graduate studies after attending the Selection and Placement Exams for Students Who Will Be Sent Abroad for Post Graduate Studies (YLSY) exams.

Minister Avcı gave some advices to the students saying they should not forget that when they leave the country they are taking Turkey along with them and that they should continue their education with this sensitivity. Minister Avcı said the Ministry will try to stand by the students as much as possible and told the students to keep a diary, learn a foreign language, meet people of other countries and have friends and spare some time for themselves.

Minister Avcı said “We are the remnants of an empire. Multicultural life is no stranger to us. When you come back home be sure to return with all the furnishings of multi-culture that befits people who have inherited from an empire.”

“Do not keep to yourselves” Minister Avcı said and added “try to learn the language of the country you go to.  Do not forget that this will also help in your academic work. Do not try to create ghettos with Turks living in the country to go to. Try to blend with the people of that country. The country you go to may be more advanced that Turkey or may be behind us. Do not forget you are now an education attaché for Turkey.”

Minister Avcı said that universities are cosmopolitan places and said the fact that different cultures come together adds values to the university. Saying they had provided sufficient amount of grant money to students going abroad and added “these are sacred funds presented to you by the nation.” 

Minister Avcı also said he wants the students to keep in mind Turkey and how their work can benefit Turkey. Avci went on to say “There will be organizations and groups who will try to trap you. They will want to steer you as they pretend to be people of goodwill. Be careful.” He also said the host country may try to make use of their postgraduate work and that they should always seek benefits for Turkey. He also told them to keep their own families posted regularly about their actions.
